Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the right to challenge certain decisions made by the official, following the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
