Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
