Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
